Public IP address: When is it needed and what are its advantages and risks?
The Internet is an essential part of our lives, both at home and at work. One of the key elements for internet connectivity is the IP address. But what is a public IP address, why might you need one, and what risks does it carry?
What is a static public IP address?
A public IP address is a unique identifier for your device on the global Internet. It allows other devices and services on the Internet to establish a direct connection to your device. This is essential for certain applications and services that require direct access from the Internet.
When is a static public IP address needed?
A public IP address is especially useful when you need remote access or monitoring of specific devices:
Photovoltaic power plants
For efficient remote management and monitoring of your solar power plant’s performance.
Boiler rooms and heating systems
Allows remote management and optimization of heating systems, which can lead to energy savings.
Security systems
For access to security cameras and alarms from anywhere, increasing the security of your property.
We recommend a public IP address only for advanced users, who have experience with network management and security.
IPv4 vs. IPv6
What’s the difference?
IPv4
Format
Consists of four numbers separated by dots (e.g., 192.168.1.1).
Availability
Limited number of addresses (about 4.3 billion), which are almost exhausted.
Advantages
Broad compatibility with most devices and services.
Disadvantages
Limited availability leads to the need to pay for a fixed address.
May require more complex configuration of network devices.
IPv6
Format
Consists of eight groups of hexadecimal numbers separated by colons (e.g., 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334).
Availability
Virtually unlimited number of addresses, solving the shortage of IPv4 addresses.
Advantages
Higher security thanks to built-in encryption and authentication.
Better performance and efficiency in data routing.
Automatic configuration capabilities.
Disadvantages
Some older devices and services may not be fully compatible.
Less awareness among users can lead to difficulties in troubleshooting.
Do you need a public IP address?
For most common activities such as browsing the web, using email or cloud services, you do not need a public IP address. These services work seamlessly via shared or private IP addresses.
Security risks of a public IP address
Assigning a public IP address to your device also brings increased security risks:
Internet exposure
Your device is directly accessible from the Internet, making it a potential target for attacks.
Malware and viruses
If your device is not adequately secured, it can fall victim to malware or viruses.
DDoS attacks
Attackers can launch a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack, which may render your device inoperable.
If your computer or device becomes infected with a virus or malware, we may be forced to disconnect you from the network immediately to prevent the spread of attacks, viruses, and spam to other parts of the network. The connection will only be restored after you take the necessary remedial actions, which may be time-consuming and costly.
Therefore, we recommend a public IP address only for advanced users with sufficient knowledge and experience in securing their systems.
